There are places along the South Carolina and Georgia coast where the past never feels very far away.

Daufuskie Island is one of them.

On October 1, I’m delighted to welcome readers back to the world of the Savannah Mysteries with The Daufuskie Tide, the third book in the series.

After the events of The Yamacraw Moon and The Wormsloe Marsh, Detective John Mitchell and historian Kate Gallagher return for a new mystery—one that carries them beyond Savannah and across the water to Daufuskie Island.

What begins amid the beauty and isolation of the Lowcountry soon becomes something darker. Old tensions, closely held secrets, and murder draw John and Kate into an investigation where the island itself becomes part of the story.

That is one of the things I have loved most about writing the Savannah Mysteries. These books are mysteries, certainly, but they are also stories about place—about the history that lingers beneath our feet and the ways the past continues to shape the people who live among its remains.

Savannah gave me The Yamacraw Moon.

Wormsloe gave me The Wormsloe Marsh.

And now the waterways, marshes, and history of Daufuskie Island have given me The Daufuskie Tide.

For readers who have followed John and Kate from the beginning, this book also carries their story forward. Their relationship has grown slowly through the series—sometimes cautiously, sometimes stubbornly—and I think readers who have been waiting to see where that relationship leads will find a few moments worth waiting for.

And, of course, there is a murder to solve.
